[Skill Builder] Putting reflections in your windows

March 16, 2017 Aaron Dietzen

It was a cold, grey German morning. It was the fourth day of Bau 2017, the "World's Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, and Systems," and it was my day to man the Trimble booth. Walking the few hundred yards from the train station was a frigid affair, and I was working my way through jet lag and a terrible cold. All I wanted to do was get inside. Despite the stinging winter cold, something stopped me dead in my tracks. It was a poster. A poster of a building drawn in some computer program, though I could not tell which. Could it be SketchUp? It was possible, except that the windows had reflections in them. This kind of effect would require some sort of render or post-processing, right?

After a little bit of tinkering, I came across a workflow that was quick, easy and, best of all, provided a pretty good looking reflection, right inside SketchUp!

Turns out, SketchUp is a great way to overcome jet lag and the common cold!
